How to care for 925 Sterling Silver.

on Feb 06 2026
Love Your Silver Longer: Three Simple Rituals for Everyday Sparkle To care for 925 Sterling Silver, follow the "Last On, First Off" rule: put your jewellery on after perfumes and lotions, and remove it before sleep or exercise. Clean your silver regularly with a dedicated silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish, and store pieces in airtight bags to prevent oxidation. While solid sterling silver can handle water, gold-plated and rose gold-plated pieces should be kept dry to preserve their finish. Is Sterling Silver High Maintenance? Understanding Your "Living" Metal Many people worry that sterling silver is "fragile", but we see it differently. Sterling silver is a "living" metal because it is naturally malleable (92.5% pure silver mixed with 7.5% copper for strength), and it can shift and react to its environment. Tarnish or a slightly bent earring post isn't a flaw; it is a characteristic of high-quality, genuine silver. With these three simple rituals, you can keep your Silver Rain treasures sparkling for a lifetime. Ritual 1: The "Gentle Adjustment" for Hoops and Studs Because genuine 925 silver is soft, it can occasionally bend under the pressure of a firm pillow or a heavy sweater. The Hoop "Click" Fix: If your hoop won't snap shut, don't panic! Simply use your finger to lift the silver post upwards by a tiny fraction of a millimetre. It will snap securely back into the clasp. The Wonky Post:  If a stud post arrives slightly bent or shifts after a long day, use slow, steady pressure to gently nudge it back into a straight line.   Ritual 2: The "Last On, First Off" Rule for Longevity Chemicals are the enemy of a mirror-like shine. Everyday products like hairspray, perfume, and moisturisers contain ingredients that can dull silver and wear down delicate 18ct Gold or 14ct Rose Gold plating. Gold & Rose Gold Plated: These must be kept dry. To preserve the beautiful 18ct gold layer, remove these pieces before swimming, bathing, or showering. Silver Care in the Water: While your solid sterling silver loves a splash in the shower, the humidity of a bathroom can accelerate tarnishing over time. The Post-Swim Rinse: If you accidentally take your silver for a dip in the sea or a chlorinated pool, rinse it immediately in fresh water and pat it dry with a soft cloth. Storage is Key: When you aren't wearing your pieces, tuck them away in the Silver Rain bag provided with your order. This limits exposure to air and moisture, the two main causes of tarnish.  Ritual 3: The "Polish & Restore" Even the most loved jewellery needs a spa day. Over time, silver reacts and starts to look dull and dark. A gentle rub with a silver polishing cloth will bring back that mirror-like shine. You can always purchase our silver polish cloth as an add-on item with your orders.  A Note on Gold & Rose Gold: If your plated pieces begin to fade, you can use a polishing cloth or even a bit of toothpaste to reveal the bright 925 sterling silver underneath. This is a great way to "upcycle" your look and embrace the silver underneath once the plating has naturally reached its end of life.  The Bottom Line: Why Proper Care Matters At Silver Rain, we design our jewellery to be "set and forget," but a little bit of mindful maintenance ensures your pieces remain heirloom-quality. By understanding the science of silver, you can keep your collection glowing through every season.   Shop our Best-Selling 925 Sterling Silver Pieces

Is Sterling Silver Good for Sensitive Ears?

on Jan 29 2026
Love Your Ears Back: Why 925 Sterling Silver is a Sensitive Soul's Bestie   925 Sterling Silver is one of the best choices for sensitive ears because it is naturally hypoallergenic. High-quality Sterling Silver, like the pieces found at Silver Rain Silver, is free from nickel, the most common cause of ear irritation and allergic reactions. When plated with Rhodium,r 18ct Gold or 14ct Rose Gold, it provides an additional protective barrier for all-day comfort. Why Do Some Earrings Make Your Ears "Hot and Itchy"?We have all been there: you find a stunning pair of earrings, but within an hour of putting them on, your ears feel hot, red, and angry. Many people assume they simply "can't wear jewellery," but the truth is often found in the metal composition, not your skin.   The Real Villain: Mostly Nickel When people talk about having "sensitive ears," they are usually experiencing a reaction to nickel. Many inexpensive earrings use nickel as a base metal because it is durable and cheap. However, nickel is one of the most common skin allergens globally. When it comes into contact with a piercing, it can trigger inflammation and discomfort.   The Material Truth: What is 925 Sterling Silver? You may have noticed the '925 stamp' on your Silver Rain jewellery.  This is the hallmark of quality. 925 Sterling Silver consists of: 92.5% Pure Silver: Naturally gentle and antimicrobial. 7.5% Copper: Added for strength (pure silver is too soft for jewellery). At Silver Rain Silver, we strictly avoid titanium, nickel, lead, cadmium or other known allergens. By adhering to this high standard, we ensure our jewellery is as kind to your skin as it is beautiful to look at.   Our "Secret Weapon" for Daily Wear We go a step further than standard sterling silver. To give your ears an extra layer of protection, our silver pieces receive a coating of Rhodium. Rhodium is a precious metal in the platinum family. It offers two major benefits for shoppers: Anti-Tarnish: It keeps your silver lasting longer. Hypoallergenic Shield: It creates a physical barrier between the metal and your skin, making our earrings safe for 24/7 wear. For our gold lovers, we use 18ct gold-plated sterling silver, and for that warm pink glow, we use 14ct rose gold-plated sterling silver. No mystery metals, just quality layers you can trust. Is it an Allergy or a Gauge Issue?  Sometimes, irritation isn't caused by the metal at all, but by the Earring Gauge (thickness). Standard stud earrings usually 20G (approx. 0.8mm). However, many professional piercings use a 16G (1.1mm) post.  If your piercing has shrunk over time, forcing a thicker post through can cause physical redness that mimics an allergic reaction. Always check the product description for the post thickness to ensure a comfortable fit. The Bottom Line If you struggle with irritation, 925 Sterling Silver with Rhodium, Rose Gold or Gold plating is the safest and most reliable choice. It allows you to enjoy stylish, intricate designs without the "angry ear" aftermath.   Explore Our Earrings Collection

What are Flat Back Earrings?

on Jan 16 2026
Why Flat Back Earrings are Your New Best Friend Flat back earrings, also known as labret studs, are jewellery pieces designed with a smooth, flat disk instead of a sharp, pointed post and butterfly clasp. This design allows the earring to sit flush against the skin, making it the best choice for side-sleepers, headphone users, and those with active lifestyles who want 24/7 comfort without pinching or snagging. Why Traditional Earrings "Poke" (and How Flat Backs Fix It) We have all experienced the "earring poke." You are winding down after a long day, you hit the pillow, and ‘ouch’, the sharp post of your earring reminds you it’s still there. Worse yet, you wake up to find a butterfly back has vanished into your bedsheets. Traditional earrings are like uninvited guests at a sleepover. Flat back earrings replace that sharp point with a smooth, surgical-grade disk. Because the back is flat, it sits perfectly flush against your skin. Whether you are a side-sleeper or a constant headphone-wearer, there is nothing to poke, snag, or pinch. It is the ultimate "set it and forget it" piece for your 24/7 sparkle. The Silver Rain Difference: Internal vs. External Threading When searching for the best flat back earrings, you will notice a big difference in how they are made. At Silver Rain Silver, we prioritise your "ear health" by using Internally Threaded designs. What is Internal Threading?Internal Threading (The Silver Rain Standard): The screw ridges are hidden inside the post. The part that slides through your ear is as smooth as silk. External Threading: The screw ridges are on the outside of the post. This can feel like sliding a tiny saw through a delicate piercing, causing irritation and micro-tears. By choosing internally threaded flat backs, you ensure your piercing stays happy, healthy, and irritation-free. How to Put in Flat Back Earrings We know it can feel like a "blindfolded magic trick" trying to screw a tiny ball onto the back of your ear. That is why our flat backs screw from the front. Follow this simple ritual to secure your sparkle: Prepare: Clean your hands and the jewellery. The Gentle Twist: Hold the flat back disk with your right hand and gently unscrew the decorative front counterclockwise with your left hand. The Slide: Slide the smooth post (available in 6mm or 8mm lengths) in from the back of your ear. The Sparkle: While looking in the mirror, simply screw the decorative front piece into the post clockwise. The Check: Give it a gentle finger-tighten to ensure it's secure. Sizing Guide: Gauges and Post Lengths To get the perfect "set it and forget it" fit, you need to know your measurements. Silver Rain flat backs come in a 16-gauge (1.1mm thickness), which is the standard for cartilage and professional lobe piercings. 6mm Post: Ideal for healed lobe piercings or "thin" cartilage (like the helix). 8mm Post: Best for initial piercings that need room for swelling, or thicker areas of the ear (like the conch). Are Flat Back Earrings Good for Sensitive Ears? Absolutely. Because our flat backs are crafted from 925 Sterling Silver and are often plated in Rhodium, 18ct Gold, or 14ct Rose Gold, they are 100% hypoallergenic and nickel-free. The flat design also reduces the "trap" for bacteria and moisture that often happens with butterfly backs, making them the most hygienic choice for long-term wear. Some of my favourite designs began as customer suggestions 💙 Hi lovely human, I wanted to write this email to say thank you, and to ask you something. From your ideas to silver So many of my favourite designs over the years have come directly from your suggestions. Some of them were beautifully specific and full of character, and they’ve led me down creative paths I might never have explored otherwise. The blue-footed booby birds are still a favourite of mine, and right now I’m working on a pair of kookaburra earrings suggested by a customer called Julianne, which already feel full of story and charm. “My kids love your earrings, especially the birds and sea-themed ones. If you ever make anything with kookaburras, please let me know.”— Julianne, customer Why I love designing this way That’s something I really value about Silver Rain Silver. It’s never been about chasing trends, but about creating storytelling jewellery. Pieces inspired by animals, nature, curiosity, and small details that mean something to the person wearing them. I love that there’s room for many different tastes, stories, and ideas. With silver prices having more than doubled over the last 12 months, choosing to make more niche designs does come with its challenges. But I feel incredibly fortunate to have a community that resonates with this way of creating, and that supports thoughtful, character-led pieces. I'd love your ideas So I wanted to ask you.If there’s an animal, idea, or little story you’d love to see turned into a piece of jewellery, I’d truly love to hear it. Thank you for being here, for sharing your ideas, and for supporting this small brand. With gratitude,EmmaSilver Rain Silver

Moissanite Magic 2: The Perfect Alternative to Diamonds

on Sep 22 2024
Moissanite is known as a good substitute for diamonds due to its remarkable resemblance in appearance and superior durability. It offers a brilliance that rivals diamonds, with a higher refractive index that gives it even more sparkle.    Moissanite vs CZ (cubic zirconia):     Although moissanite is lab-created like cz and looks similar in appearance, they are actually quite different. Moissanite is harder and more durable compared to cubic zirconia. In addition, moissanite has a higher refractive index and more luster, as well as a special fire color. Therefore moissanite will cost more than cz.   Moissanite Cuts: Moissanite comes in a variety of cuts, each with its own unique look and characteristics: 1. Round CutDescription: The most popular and classic cut. Known for its brilliance and fire due to its 58 facets.Style: Timeless and versatile, often used in engagement rings.     2. Oval CutDescription: An elongated shape with rounded edges, offering the brilliance of a round cut but with a unique, elegant twist.Style: Makes fingers appear longer and more slender. Great for modern, sophisticated designs.   3. Emerald CutDescription: A rectangular cut with long, straight facets. It offers a "hall of mirrors" effect rather than the sparkle of other cuts.Style: Understated and elegant, with a vintage appeal.4. Pear CutDescription: A teardrop shape that combines a round and marquise cut, with one rounded end and one pointed end.Style: Unique and elongates the finger, adding a touch of drama to the piece.     Why choose us? We are dedicated to enhancing the quality of our products while keeping our prices competitive. Our jewelry features nearly colorless moissanite diamonds, ensuring you receive stunning, high-quality pieces at a great value. The color grading of moissanite is determined by assessing the stone's appearance under specific lighting conditions. Higher-quality moissanites typically fall into the colorless or near-colorless ranges, making them excellent alternatives to diamonds for those seeking a high level of brilliance and clarity.    Colorless (D-E-F): These moissanites are virtually indistinguishable from diamonds and offer the highest level of brilliance. They are clear and do not exhibit any noticeable color.   Near-Colorless (G-H): Moissanites in this range are still very close to colorless and can appear virtually colorless to the naked eye, especially when set in jewelry.   Yellow Tinted (J-K): Moissanites with these grades may show a slight yellow tint. This color is more apparent and can affect the overall appearance of the stone, but it still maintains a good level of sparkle and brilliance.   While our pieces do not come with a formal certificate, we guarantee that our moissanite will pass a diamond test, ensuring you receive a high-quality product that shines just as brightly.

Moissanite Magic 1: Discover the Beauty and Value of Moissanite

on Sep 22 2024
In Silver Rain Silver, we specialize in crafting exquisite silver jewelry, designed to captivate and endure. We use 925 sterling silver as the foundation for each piece, meticulously hand setting moissanite stones to ensure superior quality and brilliance. Moissanite, renowned for its diamond-like sparkle and durability, is the perfect complement to our silver designs.     What’s Moissanite? Moissanite is a naturally occurring mineral discovered in a meteor crater by Dr. Henri Moissan in 1893. While natural moissanite is incredibly rare, today, we use lab-created moissanite, which is crafted with precision to deliver an exceptional sparkle and clarity that rivals even diamonds.     How are moissanite diamonds made? Creation of Silicon Carbide: Moissanite is composed of silicon carbide (SiC). Silicon carbide can be crystallized which is synthesized in a lab by combining silicon and carbon at high temperatures.  Cutting and Polishing: Once the moissanite crystals have formed, they are cut and polished to enhance their brilliance and clarity. The cutting process involves shaping the rough crystal into desired facets and polishing it to achieve a high-quality gemstone.   Why Choose Moissanite?    1. Durability: Moissanite is considered an excellent alternative to diamonds because of its striking similarity in appearance and impressive durability. With a hardness of 9.25 on the Mohs scale, moissanite is only slightly softer than diamonds, making it highly resistant to scratches and ideal for everyday wear. 2. Brilliance: One of the standout features of moissanite is its brilliance. Its refractive index is slightly higher than that of diamonds, which means moissanite reflects more light, creating a more intense sparkle. Additionally, its fire, or color dispersion, is more than twice that of diamonds (0.104 vs. 0.044), giving it a rainbow-like brilliance under light. 3. Sustainability: Because moissanite is lab-created rather than mined like diamonds, it is more ethical and environmentally friendly, making it a highly prized gemstone
