The Birthday Edit: A Guide to Your Personal Birthstone  There is something so special about wearing a piece of the earth that was "assigned" to you the month you were born. It's more than just a pop of colour; it's a little piece of your identity that you can wear every day. At Silver Rain Silver, we love the tradition of birthstones because they turn a beautiful piece of jewellery into a personal talisman. Whether you are celebrating your own trip around the sun or looking for a "made-for-you" gift for a loved one, here is our guide to the magic of birthstones. The 12 Months of Magic Every month carries its own unique energy. Each image below is a portal. How to care for 925 Sterling Silver.

Love Your Silver Longer: Three Simple Rituals for Everyday Sparkle   We have all been there: you have just had a long, beautiful, or stressful day, and all you want to do is sink into your pillow. You love your Silver Rain hoops and flat backs because they are designed to be "set and forget", the kind of jewellery you never have to take off. But occasionally, you might wake up and realise your hoop isn't "clicking" quite as securely as it used to, or your favourite ring looks a little sleepy. Before you panic, your jewellery isn't broken! Sterling silver is a beautiful, "living" metal. Because it is naturally soft and malleable, it can shift with the rhythm of your life. To keep your treasures in tip-top shape, here are our favourite "Modern Romance" rituals to keep you sparkling. Ritual 1: The "Gentle Adjustment" We know the dream: putting on a pair of hoops and never taking them off again. Our jewellery is crafted for exactly that 24/7 comfort, but life happens. Whether it’s a restless night, a firm pillow, or accidentally catching a stud on a sweater in your gym bag, silver can bend under pressure. If your hoop won't click shut, it just needs a tiny "wake-up call". Simply lift the post upwards with your finger just a tiny fraction of a millimetre until it snaps securely back into the clasp.   The Wonky Post: If a stud post arrives slightly bent or gets "wonky" after a long day, don't panic; it isn't a flaw, it's just a characteristic of high-quality silver. Use slow, steady pressure to gently bend it back into place with your fingers.   Ritual 2: The "Last On, First Off" Rule We love a signature scent, but your silver doesn’t. Everyday chemicals found in perfumes, hairsprays, and lotions can dull your shine or wear down delicate 18ct gold plating. Make your jewellery the very last thing you put on in the morning and the first thing you take off at night. Keep Gold & Rose Gold Dry: To keep your gold or rose gold-plated jewellery looking its best, please take it off before swimming, bathing, or showering. Because these are high-quality plated sterling silver items, they need to stay dry to preserve their beautiful finish. Silver Care in the Water: While your solid sterling silver loves a splash in the shower, the damp humidity of a bathroom or the chlorine in a pool can lead to tarnishing and pitting over time. The Post-Swim Rinse: If you do take an accidental dip in the sea, simply rinse your pieces in fresh water immediately and pat them dry with a soft cloth. Safe Storage: When you aren't wearing your pieces, tuck them away in the Silver Rain bag provided with your order to keep them away from moisture and air. Ritual 3: The "Polish & Restore" Even the most loved jewellery needs a little spa day now and then. If your silver starts to look a little dull, a gentle rub with a silver polishing cloth will bring back that mirror-like shine. You can always purchase our silver polish cloth as an add-on item with your orders.  A Note on Gold & Rose Gold: If your plated pieces begin to fade, you can use a polishing cloth or even a bit of toothpaste to clean them. This will reveal the bright 925 sterling silver underneath. While it makes the piece shine again, remember that this will eventually wear away the gold layer, so use this ritual only when you're ready to embrace the silver underneath! The Bottom Line Sterling silver is meant to be lived in, and a little bit of maintenance is just a sign of a piece well-loved. By following these simple rituals, you ensure your Silver Rain treasures stay as beautiful as the day they arrived.  Jewellery should feel good, not something you have to worry about.

Is Sterling Silver Good for Sensitive Ears?

on Jan 29 2026
Love Your Ears Back: Why 925 Sterling Silver is a Sensitive Soul’s Bestie   We have all been there: you find an absolutely stunning pair of earrings, you purchase them, and within an hour of putting them on, your ears are hot, itchy and angry. It’s a frustrating cycle that usually ends with your favourite jewellery sitting at the bottom of a jewellery box, never to be worn again, making you sometimes believe you just "can't wear jewellery."  At Silver Rain Silver,  we believe you shouldn't have to choose between style and comfort. This is why we would like to let you in on a little secret: your ears might not be the problem; it’s the metal."   The Real Villain: Mostly Nickel When people talk about having "sensitive ears," what they are usually experiencing is a reaction to nickel. Many cheaper earrings use nickel as a base metal because it’s hard and inexpensive, but it is also one of the most common skin allergens in the world. When nickel comes into prolonged contact with the skin (especially in piercings), it can trigger itching, inflammation, and discomfort. That "angry ear" feeling is your body's way of telling you it doesn't like what’s touching it. That is why we are so strict about what goes into our jewellery.   The Material Truth: What is 925 Sterling Silver? You have likely seen the ‘925 stamp’ on your jewellery when you purchase from us, but what does it actually mean?  Since pure silver is too soft to hold a shape on its own, it must be mixed with another metal for strength. All our pieces of jewellery are made with 925 sterling silver, which consists of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper. We purposefully avoid titanium, nickel, steel, or any other known allergens in our mix. By sticking to this high standard, we ensure your jewellery is as kind to your skin as it is beautiful to look at. Sterling silver is widely recognised as a skin-safe, hypoallergenic option for most people with sensitive ears.   Our "Secret Weapon" for Daily Wear We don’t just stop at sterling silver. To give your ears an extra layer of love, our silver pieces receive a coating of rhodium. Rhodium is a precious metal in the platinum family that prevents tarnishing while also creating an extra shield between the metal and your skin, making your jewellery even safer for 24/7 wear. For our gold lovers, we use 18ct gold-plated sterling silver, and for that warm pink glow, we use 14ct rose gold-plated sterling silver. No mystery metals, just quality layers you can trust. Did You Know? It Might Not Be an Allergy Sometimes, that "angry ear" feeling isn't an allergy at all; it's a gauge mismatch. Standard stud earrings usually have a very thin post, 20G (about 0.7mm-0.8mm). However, many professional piercings use a 16G (1.1mm) post. If your piercing hole hasn't been expanded or has shrunk over time, trying to fit a 16G flat back can feel tight, causing physical irritation and redness that mimics an allergic reaction. Pro Tip: If you have very small or "standard" piercings, we recommend checking the product description for the post thickness. Choosing a gauge that matches your ear’s comfort level is just as important as choosing the right metal.  The Bottom Line If you have sensitive ears, 925 sterling silver with rhodium or gold plating is one of the safest and most comfortable choices you can make, especially when paired with thoughtfully designed flat backs. That’s why we confidently tell our customers: our earrings are made to be gentle, protective, and comfortable, without compromising on style. Because jewellery should feel good, not something you can’t wait to take off.

What are Flatback Earrings?

on Jan 16 2026
Why Flat Back Earrings are Your New Best Friend We have all been there: you have just had a long, beautiful, or stressful day, and all you want to do is sink into your pillow. Then, ouch, that sharp poke of an earring post behind your ears reminds you that you forgot to take off your earrings, or worse, you wake up and realise a butterfly back has vanished into the sheets. At Silver Rain Silver, we believe your earrings should be comfortable enough that you forget you have them on, yet so beautiful that you do not want to take them off. This is where these little game changers come in: the Flat Back Earrings (our sleep-safe secret). What Exactly is a Flat Back Earring? Most traditional earrings are like an uninvited guest at a sleepover: a sharp post that pokes out the back and is held by a butterfly clasp. A Flat Back replaces that sharp point with a smooth, flat disk. Because it's flat, it sits flush against your skin. Whether you are a side-sleeper or a headphone-wearer, there is nothing to poke, snag, or pinch. It is the ultimate "set it and forget it" piece for your 24/7 sparkle. A Gentle Touch: The Internally Threaded Secret When we first discovered flat backs, we realised not all were created equal. Many use "external threading," where the screw ridges are on the outside of the post. It felt a bit like sliding a tiny saw through a delicate piercing.  Our Silver Rain flat backs are internally threaded. This means the post is perfectly smooth on the outside. It glides through your ear like silk, keeping your piercing happy and healthy. The "screw" part is hidden safely inside the post itself. We know it can be a struggle to screw a tiny ball onto the back of your ear where you can't see it. It feels like a blindfolded magic trick. Our solution? Our flat backs screw from the front. Here is a  little ritual we advise you follow every time you get a new pair: Prepare: Make sure your hands are clean and free from any oils so you have a good grip. The Gentle Twist: Hold the flat back disk with your right hand and gently unscrew the decorative front counterclockwise with your left hand. The Slide: Slide the smooth 8mm/6mm post in from the back of your ear. The Sparkle: While looking in the mirror, simply screw the pretty design into the post from the front. It's secure, it's simple, and it stays put until you decide it's time for a change. Whether you are styling a healed cartilage piercing or your everyday lobes, these 16-gauge (1.1mm thick) beauties are designed to be your most reliable companions. Some of my favourite designs began as customer suggestions 💙 Hi lovely human, I wanted to write this email to say thank you, and to ask you something. From your ideas to silver So many of my favourite designs over the years have come directly from your suggestions. Some of them were beautifully specific and full of character, and they’ve led me down creative paths I might never have explored otherwise. The blue-footed booby birds are still a favourite of mine, and right now I’m working on a pair of kookaburra earrings suggested by a customer called Julianne, which already feel full of story and charm. “My kids love your earrings, especially the birds and sea-themed ones. If you ever make anything with kookaburras, please let me know.”— Julianne, customer Why I love designing this way That’s something I really value about Silver Rain Silver. It’s never been about chasing trends, but about creating storytelling jewellery. Pieces inspired by animals, nature, curiosity, and small details that mean something to the person wearing them. I love that there’s room for many different tastes, stories, and ideas. With silver prices having more than doubled over the last 12 months, choosing to make more niche designs does come with its challenges. But I feel incredibly fortunate to have a community that resonates with this way of creating, and that supports thoughtful, character-led pieces. I'd love your ideas So I wanted to ask you.If there’s an animal, idea, or little story you’d love to see turned into a piece of jewellery, I’d truly love to hear it. Thank you for being here, for sharing your ideas, and for supporting this small brand. With gratitude,EmmaSilver Rain Silver

Moissanite Magic 2: The Perfect Alternative to Diamonds

on Sep 22 2024
Moissanite is known as a good substitute for diamonds due to its remarkable resemblance in appearance and superior durability. It offers a brilliance that rivals diamonds, with a higher refractive index that gives it even more sparkle.    Moissanite vs CZ (cubic zirconia):     Although moissanite is lab-created like cz and looks similar in appearance, they are actually quite different. Moissanite is harder and more durable compared to cubic zirconia. In addition, moissanite has a higher refractive index and more luster, as well as a special fire color. Therefore moissanite will cost more than cz.   Moissanite Cuts: Moissanite comes in a variety of cuts, each with its own unique look and characteristics: 1. Round CutDescription: The most popular and classic cut. Known for its brilliance and fire due to its 58 facets.Style: Timeless and versatile, often used in engagement rings.     2. Oval CutDescription: An elongated shape with rounded edges, offering the brilliance of a round cut but with a unique, elegant twist.Style: Makes fingers appear longer and more slender. Great for modern, sophisticated designs.   3. Emerald CutDescription: A rectangular cut with long, straight facets. It offers a "hall of mirrors" effect rather than the sparkle of other cuts.Style: Understated and elegant, with a vintage appeal.4. Pear CutDescription: A teardrop shape that combines a round and marquise cut, with one rounded end and one pointed end.Style: Unique and elongates the finger, adding a touch of drama to the piece.     Why choose us? We are dedicated to enhancing the quality of our products while keeping our prices competitive. Our jewelry features nearly colorless moissanite diamonds, ensuring you receive stunning, high-quality pieces at a great value. The color grading of moissanite is determined by assessing the stone's appearance under specific lighting conditions. Higher-quality moissanites typically fall into the colorless or near-colorless ranges, making them excellent alternatives to diamonds for those seeking a high level of brilliance and clarity.    Colorless (D-E-F): These moissanites are virtually indistinguishable from diamonds and offer the highest level of brilliance. They are clear and do not exhibit any noticeable color.   Near-Colorless (G-H): Moissanites in this range are still very close to colorless and can appear virtually colorless to the naked eye, especially when set in jewelry.   Yellow Tinted (J-K): Moissanites with these grades may show a slight yellow tint. This color is more apparent and can affect the overall appearance of the stone, but it still maintains a good level of sparkle and brilliance.   While our pieces do not come with a formal certificate, we guarantee that our moissanite will pass a diamond test, ensuring you receive a high-quality product that shines just as brightly.

Moissanite Magic 1: Discover the Beauty and Value of Moissanite

on Sep 22 2024
In Silver Rain Silver, we specialize in crafting exquisite silver jewelry, designed to captivate and endure. We use 925 sterling silver as the foundation for each piece, meticulously hand setting moissanite stones to ensure superior quality and brilliance. Moissanite, renowned for its diamond-like sparkle and durability, is the perfect complement to our silver designs.     What’s Moissanite? Moissanite is a naturally occurring mineral discovered in a meteor crater by Dr. Henri Moissan in 1893. While natural moissanite is incredibly rare, today, we use lab-created moissanite, which is crafted with precision to deliver an exceptional sparkle and clarity that rivals even diamonds.     How are moissanite diamonds made? Creation of Silicon Carbide: Moissanite is composed of silicon carbide (SiC). Silicon carbide can be crystallized which is synthesized in a lab by combining silicon and carbon at high temperatures.  Cutting and Polishing: Once the moissanite crystals have formed, they are cut and polished to enhance their brilliance and clarity. The cutting process involves shaping the rough crystal into desired facets and polishing it to achieve a high-quality gemstone.   Why Choose Moissanite?    1. Durability: Moissanite is considered an excellent alternative to diamonds because of its striking similarity in appearance and impressive durability. With a hardness of 9.25 on the Mohs scale, moissanite is only slightly softer than diamonds, making it highly resistant to scratches and ideal for everyday wear. 2. Brilliance: One of the standout features of moissanite is its brilliance. Its refractive index is slightly higher than that of diamonds, which means moissanite reflects more light, creating a more intense sparkle. Additionally, its fire, or color dispersion, is more than twice that of diamonds (0.104 vs. 0.044), giving it a rainbow-like brilliance under light. 3. Sustainability: Because moissanite is lab-created rather than mined like diamonds, it is more ethical and environmentally friendly, making it a highly prized gemstone
